Night Class: Nancy

Hey there boys and girls! Time for another spotlight, this time on Nancy, the Ceramics teacher.

Nancy started out as a doodle I made a number of years back. This is the very first full body picture I did of her, actually. I was just plowing my way through a series of characters, trying to fall in love with one, to no avail. For a long time, I gave up, and put everything away in a folder.

However, while I was trying to develop night class, I took a look through the folder again. The only character I pulled from it was Nancy, who was then named Carol. It's most likely the weird style I drew her in, but I had to have her in Night Class, one way or another. So, a few redo's later, I came up with this:

Very few changes to be sure, but a couple were made. For one, she has a tail. I changed the chest to not be so angular and abstract looking, and gave her closer to an anatomically correct body. I kept the elongated neck and sharp fingers though, to still give the appearance of her being a monster of some sort, though it's not entirely apparent at first.

Originally, she was going to be the swamp creature, but I wasn't entirely sold on the idea, so I went through my backlog of monsters, and settled on Gorgon. I'm putting my own little spin on the idea of it, so that she'll be allowed to teach, but I think that you'll all like her nonetheless. And of course, teach what you know: Nancy is the ceramics teacher.

Enjoy!

Night Class: Headshots and Hannah

Hey guys! I know I promised an update today, so I figured I'd let you in on most of the cast of my new and upcoming webcomic, Night Class! (Yes, I shortened the name) These are a series of quick doodles I did, to show you the kind of style you can look forward to seeing in the finished product. As well, I've decided to do a small profile every once in a while of some of the characters as I come to drawing more fleshed out versions of them, when I'm not working diligently. You folks have already seen profiles for both Isaac Stanley and Edgar, so next up on the list is Hannah!

Hannah isn't featured up in the busts up top, mostly because I wanted to get the more fleshed out versions of her done for this post. Originally, Hannah was going to star in a comic entitled "Stereotypes" that I was working on, but scrapped because I didn't truly like the content. The idea was that there were a series of characters that we would flash back to every once in a while to see them in their awkward teenage years, and now that they had grown up. Hannah was originally going to be a sort of emo/metal chick that didn't like or talk to anyone, save for the small clique that she had set up. Fast forwarding a few years, this was the "current" Hannah, who worked as a vets assistant and receptionist at an animal shelter. Originally, Icarus was in this comic too, but we'll get into him next time.

Keeping her in mind for Night Class, I really liked the way I made her design, but wasn't entirely happy with it. So a few minor changes later, Hannah became this:

This is Hannah in her current state. I tightened up her face a little bit and moved a lot of her features together vertically, and spread the eyes apart a bit more. Also, I took away the waves in the back of her hair, so that it was a bit more angular. I changed the spaghetti top to white, which is a slight contrast what she is, and gives the reader a bit more of a sense of her personality, I like to think. I also took Buff, from my other idea, "Shellter", and gave him to her as a pet. I think he'll be happy here, and maybe in the future when Shellter starts, I can make references here and there to this comic. That's assuming any of you read this one to begin with!

Hannah is a student in Night Class, a vampire and daughter to the womens study teacher, Gilead. I've kept the idea that she works in an animal shelter, only as a 24 hour receptionist, and not a vets assistant. She's got a pretty chipper attitude overall, and I think that once my story telling gets up to speed, you'll really like her!

Let me know what you guys think!

Horrors of Night Class

Hey there guys! Haven't updated for a bit, so I thought I'd give you a sample of some stuff I've been working on.

Currently, I'm working on two comics. One of which is called The Horrors of Night Class. In it, I feature a ton of classic monsters, going through a rehab period teaching night school. Below are two of those characters.

This is Prof. Isaac Stanley, whom those of you who have been following me have probably seen the first sketch of. He's a wolfman, and thanks to a mishap with the court system that'll be explained later on, he's stuck as a werewolf. The good news is that he retains his humanity, and is fairly well versed. Therefore, he teaches English at the nightschool.

This here is Edgar. Risen from his funeral, there was a rather large misunderstanding that he was out to eat others, ignoring the fact that he doesn't have a lower jaw. On the run for the past 80 years, the justice system finally caught him. When they found out about his sentience, though, instead of executing him on the spot, he was tried and sentenced to community service equal to his "reign of terror". Edgar currently teaches American History at the Night School.

I'll post a few more characters as I get them full of lines. I was going to shade these, and I might go back and do that, but I wanted to be sure I got these up in the meantime, so you didn't think I had up and left on you.

EDIT: Just realized I forgot to draw in Isaac's tail, so that shading thing will probably happen sooner rather than later.

Work sketches number whatever

For Vince. And any Naruto fans out there.

It took me forever to find out what that stupid move was called.

More work sketches

So, I have a few work sketches lined up, such as a pile of burning electronics ala Fahrenheit 451, and a ninja in a porta-potty (wat), but my friend Alexcia has requested of me, a gnome! She was as kind to give me a short description of gnomes, their intentions, and what they look like. She even drew me a little picture, which I have posted to my monitor right now! So, she got bumped to the top of the list. Alexcia, here is your Gnome:

Isn't he just ADORABLE.

EDIT: Just noticed not two seconds after I posted this that I misspelled BOTH the words "mischief" AND "mayhem". I can't change it now though, I'm too far into the system. We'll just have to overlook this glaring and embarrassing mistake, together.

Sketches from Work 4

Last work sketch that was requested of me. This one was from James, who requested "His dog thumbing it's nose at chicken meatloaf". I wasn't really sure thumbing it's nose would get the point across, so I tried to do something a little differently:

It's midnight on a Sunday night, and I think it's funny. So sue me!

This has been fun, and I'd like to do more work sketches, if possible. If you have a suggestion, feel free to request it of me!

Talk to you all soon!

Sketches from Work 3

Todays sketch comes courtesy of Max! He requested "Darth Vader being attacked by a shark":

Did the best I could with what I had, Max.

Sketches from Work 2

Hello again everyone! Day 2 brings us a request from Nate, who wanted "a racoon buying a New Yorker, while wearing a sherlock holmes hat and pipe":

I tried my best Nate.

Two more to go!

Sketches from Work 1

Hey there everyone! So, I've been in a little bit of a slump as of late, as I'm sure most of you could tell with the terrible and altogether terrifying drawings that I've made. So, today I work, I put out a request for 5 sketches to make. I'm hoping that this will jumpstart my creativity. And you reap the rewards!

The first comes from Vince, who wanted a man laden in Victorian garb, drinking tea, and firing a flintock pistol:

Fable 2 much? :D

The next one comes from Eric, who requested a "badass undead dragon":
Dragons are cool, and the Fonz is the most badass person I know. It was only natural to mix the two.

Anyhow, I hope to post up at least 2 more tomorrow, but the next in line is something that I'm actually kind of excited to draw, if I can get it right. We'll see!

Talk to you all soon!

Oh god

A man broke in and started drawing. I tried to stop him, but he punched me right in the teeth.

More random drawings.

Saturday, June 12, 2010

Hey guys! Second lesson happened here not but 10 minutes ago, so I figured I'd post up the reference I made while I was teaching.

He also asked about my coloring, so I I dropped a couple of watercolor-ish colors on it real quick:

Overall successful lesson, I think. Maybe he'll be comfortable with me posting a couple of his pictures in the future!

Tomorrow is up in the air, so I'll probably get SOMETHING drawn. We'll see how it goes.

Talk to you soon!

Saturday, June 5, 2010

Hey there guys! A friend of mine asked me to start teaching him how to draw a bit, and so I decided to start giving him lessons. Problem is, he wants to learn to do anime, which I'm not entirely great at. But that's never stopped me! Above are the two examples I used in a 2 hour lesson last Tuesday night. I hope to do the next lesson by the time he gets back, but we'll see.

In the meantime, work is going to be starting for me on Monday, and I'm doing a workout regimine for the next 90 days to get myself into better shape (which is any shape). But I'm still going to make time for my drawing. I might just have trouble holding the pencil up, is all. But hey, that's what teeth are for, right?

Also, if you ever have any requests for me on what I should draw, comment on the posts. I won't do everything, but if your request is particularly interesting to me, or I just happen to have free time, I'll try my best.

Thanks, as always!

Hey guys!

Sorry I haven't been posting lately, I've been busy finishing up moving and settling in to my new apartment. Oh yeah, I moved, by the way. I live in Seattle now. But now that I'm done (for the most part), you should be seeing a lot more posts from me!

Went to the local bookstore and eatery today, and left an as-per-usual thank you note for whoever gets to it first/wants it. This is the one that I left today. If you visit the blog, let me know if you got it, and if you enjoy it! I love any and all feedback.

Comic work is a bit slow lately, mostly due to the fact that I haven't had any real ideas. The general rule for this sort of thing is to take one of your ideas, and run with it. It'll grow into something more, something much, MUCH better over time. But I guess I'm just having problems falling in love with a specific story, or set of characters. Hmm.

Anyhow, as I said, expect more from me in the coming weeks, as now I have my free time back for the most part, and can partake in the art stuffs! I quiver with glee.

Fanart for Super Street Fighter 4

Hey guys! So Super Street Fighter 4 came out, and I'm a huge fan! Luckily, it's got one of my favorite characters, Cody Travers, and a newcomer that I'm absolutely head over heels for, Juri Han.

Someday soon, I'm going to be buying a Fighting stick as well, and since my friend Stephen loves making templates for fightsticks, I decided to make some art for him to do something with when the time comes!

I'm in the middle of inking it now, but I just wanted to give you a semi blurry rendition of what's in store. Post the end result soon!

Starbucks

Hey there everyone! Taking a bit of a vacation. I'm up in a secluded town for about a week, just enjoying the fresh air, and pleasant people.

So for the past couple of days, I've been going into Starbucks for a good hour or two, and before I leave, I've been drawing a little doodle for them to thank them for the tea, and then I leave it on the table and take off. Well today, I came in and saw that they had posted them on the community board for the place to see! I decided I'd take a picture and post them up here, as proof that I have been drawing.

Talk to you guys soon!

Some older art

Hey there guys. I know I haven't posted anything for about a month, but I've been super busy.

I've been trying to find a new job for quite a while now, but to no avail. Past that, all the rest of my time was being taken up by my existant job.

Well good news, everyone! I got fired! So now I've got all kinds of time to draw art, and post it up for all of you! The excitement is brimming. BRIMMING!

In the meantime, here is a couple of older doodles that I've done, something to hold you over until I draw some new pieces (and hopefully buy a scanner).

P.S. Anyone got a job offer? :D

First dump of art

Figured I would post a couple of pictures for all of you to take a look at before I start posting some new stuff. A couple of doodles, and a picture of Balasar the Dragonborn, from my game of Dungeons and Dragons (a bit of a nerd). Stay tuned for more!

First post

Hey guys! Just a quick little art blog, so I can dump stuff, whether it be junk art, or full blown inked items. Feel free to contact me as well, if you have any requests. I do mostly cartoons, but have been known to once in a while try for something a little bit more serious. Then again, you may think that my drawings are terrible. So I guess we'll see!

Either way, hope you like it.
